The Blue Devils seem to be leading the charge with a recent score of 91.7. Thats the highest score of the season so far. The Cavaliers and Cadets are right behind them - and on any given night, could probably play just as well --- but it looks like the Devils are shifting out on top. Not too many weeks left in the season.
The pack is nearing the 90 mark. The usual suspects are topping the boards every night and inching toward 90 point performances. The Blue Devils are the closest so far with a 89.65 in their performance on 7/15. The time for construction and change is over now, and all thats left is to polish things up. Can't wait to see what it's like at the end.
Lots of 80s scored over the weekend. A few more corps crept over the 80 threshold and the several pushed ahead to flirt with 84 point performances. The Cadets led the way with their performance on 7/2 in Glen Falls, NY scoring an 83.95 which is the highest score of the season so far. The Cavaliers who had been enjoying strong showings and several victories slipped in their show on 7/2 in Centerville, OH and opened the door wide for the Bluecoats and the Blue Devils, each scoring in the 83s while the Cavies settled for a score in the upper 82s. The Coats even trumped the Devils, which is no small feat. The usual corps are still at the top but things may be shaking up a bit.
The Cadets may have been the first to break 80, but the other corps are hot on their tails. Thursday night saw three corps break into the 80 range: the Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment, and the Blue Devils. The Cavies scored an 81.9 in Oswego, Il, Phantom scored an 80.5 in Elizabeth, PA and the Devils scored an 80.6 in Evansville, IN.
Looks like everyone is gaining momentum as we head into July. There's bound to be some good shows in the weeks to follow.
Even though the Blue Devils and Cavies started the season on the fast track ( scoring two point better than the second corps ) the Cadets, surprisingly, are the first to break the 80 point threshold for this season. The Devils and Cavies are on the doorstep and should cross that line sometime this week too. The Bluecoats are still hanging in there and thats good to see too. The Glassmen scored 72.2 at their last show - so they'll have to step it up if they want to contend. I'm afraid it'll be the same old story with the Glassmen this year --- too many artistic/interpretative elements that are lost on crowds/judges that want technically challenging music and in-your-face action. Don't get me wrong, the Glassmen are good - but sometimes its too much intricacy and they sacrifice the excitement that a good grove or heavy rock section can convey (I'm picturing the Scouts "Strawberry Soup" and those famous Blue Devils tom/cymbal racks) We'll see what they can do --- there is still time to right the ship...
